THE QUICK START

From box to first
safe transaction.

Setting up a hardware wallet doesn’t have to feel complicated. Take it one step at a time, and always trust what you see on your device screen.

01

Unbox and inspect your device

Check that your Ledger device and packaging appear intact. Buy directly from Ledger or an authorized reseller, and never use a device that arrives with a recovery phrase already written down.

02

Install Ledger Wallet

Download Ledger Wallet (formerly Ledger Live) only from Ledger’s official website or the official app store listing. Confirm the publisher before installing, then open the app and follow its genuine-device check.

03

Initialize your Ledger

Choose to set up a new device and follow its on-screen prompts. Create your own PIN directly on the device. Never accept a PIN or recovery phrase supplied by another person.

04

Write down your recovery phrase

Your device will show a recovery phrase once during setup. Write it on the recovery sheets and verify each word on the device. Keep it offline, private, and in a secure place.

05

Add accounts and receive assets

Use Ledger Wallet to install the relevant blockchain app and add an account. To receive funds, verify the address on your Ledger device screen before sharing or sending anything.

01

Your recovery phrase stays private.

Never share it with anyone—not even someone claiming to be support. Ledger support will never ask for it.

02

Verify on the device screen.

Check addresses and transaction details on your Ledger screen before approving. What you confirm is what gets signed.

03

Slow down around surprises.

Ignore unsolicited links, urgent messages, and giveaways that ask you to connect a wallet or reveal your phrase.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

A few helpful things to know before you get started.

What is Ledger Wallet?

Ledger Wallet, formerly known as Ledger Live, is Ledger’s companion app for managing accounts and interacting with supported crypto assets alongside a Ledger hardware wallet. Download it through Ledger’s official website or an official app store.

Does Ledger store my recovery phrase?

Your recovery phrase is generated and displayed on your device during setup. Ledger will never ask you to share it. Anyone with the phrase may be able to access your crypto, so keep it offline and never enter it into a website, app, or message.

What if I already have a recovery phrase?

If you are restoring a wallet, only enter your existing recovery phrase on the Ledger device itself during the official restoration flow. Do not type it into a computer, phone, or website. If you are uncertain whether it has been exposed, consult Ledger’s official help center.

Can I use Ledger without buying crypto?

Yes. You can initialize your device and explore Ledger Wallet without purchasing crypto. Take time to learn how device verification, accounts, and transaction confirmation work before moving assets.
